Summary

Parasol Henbē began as a Japanese multimedia franchise imagined by the legendary duo Fujiko Fujio A—Motoo Abiko’s pen name. The concept first appeared in Kodansha’s Hero Magazine from late 1989 to early 1991, later collected into two paperback volumes, and it quickly blossomed into a 200‑episode anime produced by Studio C&D that aired on NHK during the same period. Central to the series is Henbee, a tiny pink, hippopotamus‑like creature who carries a magical parasol that lets him fly, cast spells, converse with animals, and grant wishes. The show’s cast includes Maruko, Megeru, Abuko, Izumi, Memosuke and Gorita, each voiced by notable talent such as Junko Hori and Tesshō Genda. The Famicom game titled Parasol Henbē adapts this whimsical world but was released exclusively in Japan, making it a rare collectible for retro‑gaming fans.

Storyline

In Parasol Henbee, the curious creature Henbē tumbles down a waterfall tunnel and awakens inside the closet of a human child named Megeru. The tunnel seals shut, trapping him in the human world, but his magical parasol lets him fly, cast spells, talk to animals, and grant wishes. Henbē quickly befriends Megeru and begins helping around her house, while occasional openings in the tunnel allow friends and animals from his own realm to slip through. When a chance to return finally appears, Henbē hesitates because of his bond with Megeru’s sister Maruko. Eventually, Henbē and Megeru set off together, using the enchanted parasol to journey back to Henbē’s home world.
