Summary
The NES version of Pac‑Man has a surprisingly tangled origin story. Tengen first slipped it onto a black cartridge without Nintendo’s seal, then Namco re‑issued the same game in 1993 with fresh branding, turning a legal skirmish into a collector’s curiosity.
Gameplay stays true to the arcade maze: I steer the yellow hero through a grid of dots, gobble the flashing power pellets, and watch the four ghosts turn a nervous blue before I can chase them for points. The maze’s side tunnels act like secret shortcuts, letting both Pac‑Man and the haunters pop out on the opposite side.
Every cleared screen drops a fruit icon that pops up for extra score, while each successive level speeds up the ghosts and shortens the power‑pellet effect, keeping the chase fresh.
The version later resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console, landed in the NES Classic Edition, and even earned a 4‑out‑of‑5 rating from AllGame, proving that the pixel‑perfect chase still thrills decades later.
Storyline
In Pac‑Man for the NES, you guide the iconic yellow hero through a closed maze, gobbling every dot while staying clear of four colorful ghosts. The specters—Blinky (red), Pinky (pink), Inky (cyan) and Clyde (orange)—each follow a distinct AI pattern: Blinky (Shadow) gives a straight chase, Pinky (Speedy) tries to cut you off, Inky (Bashful) uses a more complex ambush, and Clyde (Pokey) flips between pursuit and retreat depending on distance. Between stages, brief cutscenes play out with Pac‑Man and Blinky in light‑hearted, comedic situations. The ghosts also have Japanese monikers that echo their tactics: おいかけ (chase), まちぶせ (ambush), きまぐれ (fickle), and おとぼけ (playing dumb).
