Summary

Obake no Q‑Tarō: Wanwan Panic, released in the West as Chubby Cherub, drops you into a quirky sky‑high shooter where you control a floating, cupid‑like figure. The character can glide through the air or trot along the ground, but staying aloft drains a visible power meter that you must keep topped up with food items.

Lollipops are the key power‑ups: they let you unleash a rapid burst of four heart‑shaped shots at the canine foes below. Other snacks simply refill the meter, letting you stay airborne longer. The balance between soaring and walking creates a rhythm that feels oddly satisfying for a 1980s NES title.

The enemy roster is oddly specific. Beagles hop across ledges and sometimes bark, sending a warning icon you must dodge. Bulky bulldogs lumber higher up, barking louder and moving slower, while indifferent cats—brown or pink—wander about immune to your attacks, adding a harmless visual clutter.

What’s especially cool is that this game was one of the first third‑party releases for the NES in North America, and it was completely rebranded because the original manga source was unknown here. The result is a charmingly odd‑ball shooter that still feels fresh when you pick it up today.

Storyline

In Obake no Q Tarou – Wanwan Panic, the cute ghost Chubby Cherub discovers that his friends have been snatched by a gang of mischievous burglars. Determined to rescue them, he must battle through twelve side‑scrolling levels, each ending with a reunion. The main obstacle is a pack of noisy dogs; the player shoots hearts to silence them, but a single bark will end the chase. A flying meter, kept up by munching food, lets Cherub stay airborne—run out and he’s forced to the ground. The game also splits into eerie “hell” zones, where darkness hides the floor and flight is impossible, and bright “heaven” zones accessed via a smoke ring, packed with 500‑point cakes and a secret scroll‑warp if you eat food from the right side throughout.
