Summary
Ninja Gaiden III – known in Japan as Ninja Ryukenden III: Yomi no Hakobune – is the final NES entry in Tecmo’s fast‑paced ninja series. It keeps the classic side‑scrolling hack‑and‑slash feel while slipping in a few surprises that feel fresh even after two predecessors.
The game adds a handful of mechanics that change how you move through the stages: you can cling to overhead pipes and ivy, wield a longer sword after finding a power‑up, and unleash a new vertical “wave” attack. Some levels even scroll vertically, forcing you to think about platforming in a different dimension.
What really sets the North American cartridge apart is its brutal difficulty. The sword is slightly shorter, enemies hit harder, continues are scarce, and the password system was stripped out, making every mistake count. This intentional ramp‑up turned the title into a notorious challenge for NES fans.
Critics at the time praised the balance of tight controls, striking graphics, and the sheer test of skill, earning it high scores from major magazines and a “Best Challenge” award from Nintendo Power in ’91.
Storyline
In Ninja Ryukenden III - Yomi no Hakobune (commonly known as Ninja Gaiden III), the story picks up after the original game when CIA operative Irene Lew is sent to investigate a mysterious new factory. While scouting the site she is chased by a man who looks exactly like Ryu Hayabusa, falls off a cliff and appears to die, prompting Ryu to clear his name by probing the laboratory where she was killed. Ryu’s investigation leads him to a shadowy figure named Clancy, who reveals that his former partner A. Foster has been creating "bio‑noids"—super‑human creatures infused with life energy from an interdimensional rift that opened after the demon’s defeat. Foster plans to turn Ryu into a bio‑noid, but Irene reappears and the look‑alike Ryu transforms into a bio‑noid before Ryu defeats it. Guided by Clancy, Ryu enters the Castle Rock fortress, where a door to the rift opens and the ruins are revealed to be an ancient dimensional warship called the "Ancient Ship of Doom." Inside the sub‑space, Ryu battles a resurrected, empowered look‑alike and later confronts Clancy, who has become a bio‑noid himself. After a lengthy duel, Ryu kills Clancy, the warship crashes back into the real world, and Castle Rock crumbles. Irene watches with him as the ship explodes and the sunrise heralds a new day, bringing the saga of Ninja Ryukenden III to a dramatic close.
