Summary

Ninja Gaiden II (known in Europe as Shadow Warriors II) builds on the original’s fast‑paced platforming with a handful of fresh tricks that keep the action feeling razor‑sharp. Ryu can now scale walls and ladders in both directions, and the new "Power Boosting Items" let him unleash shuriken boomerangs, fire‑wheel projectiles and even an invincible fire barrier that swirls three fireballs around him. Each of these attacks draws from a separate ninja‑power meter, so managing that resource becomes a constant tactical choice. A standout mechanic is the orange ninja symbol: grab it and an orange shadow clone mirrors every move you make, letting you double‑tap walls, trap enemies, or line‑up boss hits with uncanny precision. The game’s cinematic cut‑scenes and gritty boss designs earned it four‑star praise from Nintendo Power and a 1990 NES Excellence Award, cementing its reputation as one of the toughest yet most stylish NES hack‑and‑slash experiences.

Storyline

Ninja Ryukenden II – Ankoku no Jashin Ken (often just called Ninja Ryukenden II) thrusts the hero Ryu into the Realm of Darkness where the evil lord Ashtar, now controlling the fallen Jaquio, schemes to open the Gate of Darkness and rule Earth. A U.S. Army Special Intelligence operative, Robert T. Sturgeon, is dispatched to locate Ryu, warn him that Irene Lew has been captured, and send him to the Tower of Lahja. After a freight‑train ride and a mountain climb, Ryu is ambushed by a tribesman of the World of Chaos, but he reaches the tower, rescues Irene and is saved from Ashtar’s energy blast when Robert shoots the dark lord in the back. Ashtar flees into the Maze of Darkness, where he wounds Irene with the Dark Sword of Chaos before Ryu defeats him and the sword vanishes, leaving Irene to urge Ryu to destroy the altar Ashtar prepared.

Ryu then enters the World of Darkness, only to confront a possessed Jaquio who claims the Dark Sword will use Irene’s life force to open the Gate. After a fierce showdown, Jaquio’s blood awakens the sword, the gate erupts, and the demon Jashin reanimates Jaquio as a demonic wall. Borrowing strength from his Dragon Sword, Ryu shatters the Dark Sword, seals Jashin, and watches the collapsing temple as Irene is revived by the Dragon Sword’s power.

The fiendish plot unfolds in a movie‑like sequence, delivering action, drama, and revenge as Ryu and Irene watch the sunrise after the darkness is sealed away.
