Summary

Ninja Kid is a quirky NES platformer that feels like a secret remix of a Japanese cartoon. The American version strips away all references to the original GeGeGe no Kitarō series, swapping the hair‑wielding Kitarō for a generic ninja named Kyo and swapping his oddball gear for more familiar shuriken‑style weapons. The game’s structure is oddly modular: you start on an overhead map dotted with arches, each arch opening a side‑scrolling stage whose shape hints at the level’s theme, and every stage ends with a pair of doors—one back to the map, the other leading to a vertical tower where a mini‑boss awaits. Random items pop up during runs, from speed‑boosts to an owl that points out the safe door, and collecting scrolls lets you unlock a central fortress for the final showdown. In the Japanese original, the scroll is a crystal ball, the familiars are manga characters like Nurikabe and Konaki Jiji, and even the enemies shift tone, featuring western monsters such as Frankenstein’s creature and a boss named Back Beard. Those cultural quirks were replaced for the U.S. release, but the core gameplay—platforming, item hunting, and summoning helpers with collected whistles—remains the same, a testament to why the title sold over a million copies in Japan despite its later identity overhaul.
