Storyline

Ninja Gaiden (NES) begins in a retro 1988 where ninja Ryu Hayabusa discovers his father Ken was killed. A letter sends Ryu to America to meet archaeologist Walter Smith, but a mysterious girl gives him a demonic “Shadow” statue. Walter reveals the Light and Shadow statues imprison the ancient demon Jashin, and the Jaquio of the Guardia de Mieux seeks to reunite them.

CIA agent Foster tells Ryu the Jaquio controls an Amazon temple in Brazil. After parachuting into the jungle, Ryu rescues the girl, defeats Bloody Malth, and finds his father enslaved as the Masked Devil. Ryu shatters the crystal that controls Ken, who sacrifices himself to block the Jaquio’s attack. Ryu then kills the Jaquio, only to face the revived Jashin during a lunar eclipse, which he also defeats.

With the temple collapsing, a dying Ken urges Ryu to leave him and take Irene Lew, the girl, with him. Irene chooses Ryu, and they watch the sunrise together.
