Summary
The US release of Ninja Gaiden III was notorious for its brutal difficulty – every hazard dealt double damage, you only got five continues, and the password system was stripped out entirely. That combination turned what could have been a tight platformer into a relentless grind, especially when spikes and quicksand could wipe out two health bars in a single hit.
MottZilla’s “Restored” hack flips the script. It brings enemy damage back to the Japanese levels, grants unlimited continues, and re‑introduces a password system that mirrors the original Famicom codes, letting you pick up where you left off without starting over.
A follow‑up patch tightens the experience even further: enemy spawn points, item counts and types now match the Japanese version, Ryu respawns at the start of the stage he died on, and spikes now inflict three bars of damage as intended.
Beyond the fixes, the game still shines with its classic Ninja Gaiden flair – you can hang from pipes and ivy, wield the Dragon Spirit Sword for extra reach, and unleash a roster of secondary weapons like Windmill Throwing Stars and the Vacuum Wave Art. All of these elements feel authentic again, making the restored version the closest you can get to the original Famicom experience on the NES.
Storyline
In Ninja Gaiden III – Restored, players take control of Ryu Hayabusa after he is falsely accused of murdering his ally Irene Lew. Determined to clear his name, Ryu investigates the laboratory where Irene fell and is drawn into a deeper conspiracy. He discovers that CIA operative Foster and a mysterious man named Clancy are exploiting an interdimensional rift to forge "bio‑noids," energy‑infused superhuman mutants.
Ryu confronts Foster via a video link, learns that a look‑alike of himself killed Irene under Foster’s orders, and is warned that Foster plans to turn Ryu’s own body into a powerful bio‑noid. After battling the transformed look‑alike, a portal to the rift opens and Clancy reveals that all three have been pawns in his scheme to seize the life‑energy of the ruins.
Venturing into the subspace, Ryu defeats a resurrected, strengthened version of his double and encounters Clancy again, who explains that Castle Rock’s ruins are actually an ancient dimensional warship called the "Ancient Ship of Doom." Clancy fires a test shot from the ship while Irene watches in horror.
In the final showdown, Ryu battles Clancy, now a bio‑noid who offers him a role in a new world order. Ryu refuses, defeats Clancy, and watches as the ship collapses and Castle Rock crumbles. The game ends with Ryu and Irene witnessing a sunrise, signaling a new beginning.
