Summary

Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos thrusts you back into Ryu Hayabusa’s relentless quest after his father’s death, hunting the scheming Ashtar. The sequel ups the platforming stakes: you can now scale walls, cling to ladders and even launch "Power Boosting" attacks while hanging—shurikens, wind‑mill boomerangs, fire‑wheel projectiles and the terrifying invincible fire barrier. Collect the orange ninja symbol and watch an eerie clone mirror your moves, opening fresh strategies for the tougher foes. Reviewers at the time praised the sharper sprites and tighter controls, calling it the sort of hardcore challenge 8‑bit gamers “lived and died for.” The game’s gritty reputation earned it the 1990 NES Excellence Award from Game Player’s and several Nintendo Power nods the following year, and its difficulty curve still draws nostalgic fans looking for that brutal yet rewarding grind.

Storyline

In Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos, Ryu is contacted by U.S. Army intelligence operative Robert Sturgeon, who warns that the evil lord Ashtar has seized the Dark Sword and plans to open the Gate of Darkness. Ryu rushes to the Tower of Lahja, rescues Irene Lew, and is ambushed by Ashtar’s tribesmen. After a fierce fight on the tower’s summit, Ashtar blasts Ryu with his sword’s energy, but Robert shoots Ashtar in the back, forcing him to flee.

Ashtar retreats into the Maze of Darkness, trying to use the Dark Sword to sacrifice Irene. Ryu battles through the maze, confronts Ashtar and defeats him as the sword vanishes. Irene says an altar must be destroyed, and Robert urges Ryu to leave her for safety.

Ryu later discovers that Jaquio, possessed by a demon, has captured Irene again and plans to exploit her life force with the Dark Sword. After a brutal showdown, Ryu defeats a reanimated Jaquio‑Jashin hybrid and shatters the Dark Sword, causing the Gate of Darkness to collapse. The temple crumbles, but the power of Ryu’s Dragon Sword revives Irene. The two watch the sunrise, knowing the darkness has been sealed once more.
