Summary
Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom expands the classic NES platforming formula with a handful of fresh moves that feel both natural and satisfying. Ryu can now cling to pipes and ivy, swing up or drop down, and even launch secondary weapons while hanging—adding a vertical layer of strategy that the earlier titles lacked. The wall‑jump mechanic is refined: a quick tap away from a wall launches Ryu into a springy rebound, letting you chain attacks across tight corridors.
The arsenal grows with the Vacuum Wave Art, rotating fire wheels, and a Dragon Spirit Sword that extends melee reach, all powered by a ninja‑power meter that you refill with red and blue capsules or the rare "Scrolls of the spirit of the Dragon." Collecting recovery medicine from crystal balls keeps your life meter topped up, but the North American version punishes mistakes harshly—each hit drains two health bars and you only get five continues, a stark contrast to the more forgiving Japanese release.
Even the aesthetic shifts toward sci‑fi, swapping the previous Cthulhu‑inspired monsters for robotic bio‑noids representing earth, wind, fire and water. The soundtrack, crafted by Hiroshi Miyazaki, Kaori Nakabai, and Rika Shigeno, underscores the futuristic vibe while still delivering that gritty Ninja Gaiden pulse.
Storyline
In Ninja Gaiden Episode III: The Ancient Ship of Doom, Ryu Hayabusa is falsely accused of killing CIA operative Irene Lew and sets out to clear his name. His investigation leads him to a laboratory where a mysterious man named Clancy warns him about a secret plan involving an interdimensional rift and energy‑infused superhuman mutants.
Ryu confronts CIA agent A. Foster via a video feed, learns that Foster and Clancy have been creating "bio‑noids"—mutants powered by the rift’s life energy—and discovers a look‑alike of himself who has already been transformed. After a series of battles, the rift opens, and Clancy reveals that the ruins of Castle Rock are actually a dimensional warship called the Ancient Ship of Doom, intended to become the foundation of a new world.
Ryu fights his way through the ship, defeats a bio‑noid Clancy, and watches as the vessel is destroyed while Irene looks on. The ship’s collapse triggers the ruin of Castle Rock, and the two survivors watch a sunrise, signaling a new beginning for humanity.
