Summary

Code Name: Viper (known in Japan as Ningen Heiki Dead Fox) feels like a love‑letter to the classic Rolling Thunder while adding a few twists that keep the action fresh. I can hop between floors by holding up or down and pressing jump, and unlike its arcade predecessor I’m able to fire mid‑air and even flip direction while airborne. The game hands me a choice between a reliable pistol and a rapid‑fire machine gun, and scattered doors hide extra ammo, health boosts, time extensions and extra lives. Power‑ups are tucked behind many of those doors, encouraging a bit of exploration between the relentless enemy waves.

Rescuing hostages is a surprisingly rewarding side‑quest; captured civilians appear in the first seven stages and thank me when I free them, adding a subtle layer of purpose beyond just blasting foes. Enemy designs range from color‑coded soldiers to oddball snipers, frogmen and manic attackers, each with distinct patterns. The eight‑stage run offers three difficulty levels, and while Famitsu gave it a modest 60, the blend of platforming agility and shooter grit still makes Dead Fox a quirky hidden gem for NES fans.

Storyline

Ningen Heiki – Dead Fox (often just called Dead Fox) puts you in the shoes of Kenny Smith, codename “Viper,” an operative of the 98th Special Forces. He receives orders from his superior, Commander Jones, to infiltrate a massive drug syndicate that spans much of South America, from Venezuela to Argentina.

The game’s structure revolves around seven distinct hideouts. In each location Kenny must locate and rescue a captured commando; the rescued soldier supplies the grenades needed to clear the final obstruction and lets the story move forward. Each rescue also yields a fragment of information that points toward the syndicate’s hidden mastermind.

After clearing a stage, Kenny and the rescued commando gather around a campfire, where the ally shares clues that appear as a blank letter gradually filling with words. These letters piece together the larger mystery, driving the player toward the ultimate showdown with the true puppet master behind the drug empire.
