Summary
Mr. Gimmick shines as a hidden gem from Sunsoft that showcases what the NES could pull off with clever engineering. The team split 256 graphic tiles into multiple subsets, allowing richly detailed sprites and fluid background cogs despite the console’s limits. Composer Masashi Kageyama pushed the standard five‑channel chip hard, producing a soundtrack that still rings out with surprisingly complex melodies compared to most 8‑bit releases.
Gameplay revolves around Yumetaro’s horn‑mounted star – a versatile tool for both offense and platforming that lets the player clear enemies and create temporary platforms. Six tightly designed stages, each guarded by a distinctive boss, culminate in a secret extra level unlocked by hidden magic items. Retro critics praised its physics and level design, and modern retrospectives regularly cite it among the NES’s prettiest, most technically ambitious titles.
Storyline
Mr. Gimmick opens on a young girl's birthday. Her busy father finally finds time to buy her a new toy, a small green creature named Yumetaro, from a crowded store. The girl instantly loves Yumetaro, and the other toys grow jealous. That night the neglected toys come alive, whisk the girl away to another dimension, leaving Yumetaro behind.
Determined to rescue her, Yumetaro follows the rogue toys through surreal stages. The player must guide him past six bosses, uncover hidden magic items, and avoid using continues. After the final boss the girl is still missing, prompting a restart, but collecting every magic item reveals a secret stage with an extra boss. Defeating it triggers a cutscene where Yumetaro saves his owner and returns her to the real world.
