Summary

EarthBound Beginnings (originally released in Japan as Mother) drops you into a quirky, late‑20th‑century United States that feels more like a satirical sketch than a traditional fantasy realm. Instead of swords and spells, you wield baseball bats, toy guns, frying pans and psychic powers, battling everything from hippie zombies to possessed vending machines and alien probes. The world is stitched together in a single, top‑down map where trains replace foot‑travel, and everyday locations like hospitals, fast‑food joints and ATMs become essential gameplay tools—heal for a fee, bank your cash, or call Ninten’s dad to save your progress.

Combat plays out in first‑person menus with the classic random‑encounter feel, letting you guard, check enemies, or unleash “SMAAAASH!!” psychic attacks. Critical hits are loud, and unconscious characters can be revived with a well‑timed PSI spell. Experience points level you up, boosting both physical and psychic stats, while loot ranges from useful items to quirky equipment like pendants and bracelets.

The party’s youthful cast—Ninten, his sister Ana, and friends Lloyd and Teddy—explores towns, deserts, swamps and caves, constantly checking objects and talking to strangers for hidden clues. This blend of modern Americana, humor and RPG mechanics makes Mother a distinct, off‑beat adventure that still feels fresh for anyone who loves retro gaming.

Storyline

In the NES classic Mother, the story opens with a mysterious disappearance of a young married couple in a rural American town in the early 1900s. Two years later the husband, George, returns alone, while his wife Maria never reappears. Fast‑forward to 1988, when a poltergeist attacks the home of a boy named Ninten; his father tells him that their great‑grandfather once studied psychic powers and urges him to investigate strange crises across the country. Ninten’s first stop is his hometown, Mother’s Day, where he is whisked to the dreamlike realm of Magicant. There, Queen Mary asks him to gather eight melodies that haunt her dreams so she can hear the full song. After returning to Earth, Ninten befriends Lloyd, a bullied prodigy, and together they deliver a lost hat to Ana, a psychic girl who joins their quest to find her missing mother. The party later meets Teddy, a gang leader who becomes an ally after a fistfight, and they battle a series of giant robots. In an underwater lab they discover EVE, a protective robot built by George, which self‑destructs to give them the seventh melody. The eighth melody comes from George’s tombstone at Holy Loly Mountain. Back in Magicant, Ninten plays the complete song on an ocarina, prompting Queen Mary to reveal herself as Maria, George’s wife. The group then confronts the alien Gyiyg aboard its mother ship; after a musical showdown, Gyiyg is moved by Maria’s love and departs, leaving an epilogue that hints at the characters’ futures.
