Summary
Mortal Kombat III Special is a bootleg fighting title that was cobbled together by the Hummer Team, essentially remixing the mechanics of Mortal Kombat II. It masquerades as a sequel, yet its DNA is clearly rooted in the earlier game, which gives it a familiar feel while still feeling a bit off‑kilter.
The ROM packs a whopping 28 fighters, achieved mostly through palette swaps that let the same sprite models wear different colors and minor tweaks. This approach inflates the roster without the need for entirely new animations, a common trick in pirate releases.
Two variants float around: the standard Mortal Kombat III Special and the oddly named Mortal Kombat 3 Special 56 Pepoles, which even sports a completely different title screen. The 56 Pepoles version also tucks the original Mortal Kombat II Special into the same cartridge, making it a curious hybrid for anyone digging through retro collections.
