Summary

Metal Slader Glory feels like a hidden gem of the Famicom era, especially because it tried to give its dialogue a voice using patterned sound effects instead of the usual monotone bleeps. That little audio trick made conversations feel oddly alive on a system that rarely ventured beyond simple beeps.

The art and script were the passion of manga artist Yoshimiru Hoshi, who was brought on after Satoru Iwata saw his striking character sketches. Hoshi spent four years perfecting pixel art that mimicked his pencil work, pushing the console’s tile‑based limits to the brink. To showcase the layered backgrounds, HAL packed the cartridge with an MMC5 chip, which handled parallax scrolling but also drove up the cost dramatically.

Nintendo only supplied a handful of MMC5 boards, so the game launched at a steep 8,900 yen and sold out its first run quickly, yet never recouped its advertising spend. Because of the limited run and pricey hardware, copies became collector’s items throughout the ’90s, earning a reputation as one of Japan’s most expensive games. Critics were split: some praised the ambitious visuals and story, while others felt the genre‑shifting gameplay was uneven.

Storyline

The story of Metal Slader Glory unfolds in the year 2062, eight years after a great war between space colonies. 17‑year‑old Tadashi Himukai, a war orphan and heavy‑machines operator, buys a used worker‑mech to start a construction business with his girlfriend Elina Furfa. When he powers it up, the disguise drops away to reveal a combat‑grade Metal Slader and a cockpit warning that reads “EARTH IN PERIL… SEEK THE CREATOR.”

Prompted by the message, Tadashi, his younger sister Azusa, and Elina set out for the nearby space stations and lunar colonies. They discover their Slader is a unique model called “Glory,” once piloted by Tadashi’s deceased father. A shape‑shifting alien infiltrates their ship and kidnaps Azusa, leading them to a secret Slader‑pilot organization headed by Catty. Catty explains the war was actually fought against extraterrestrials, that the aliens can assume human form, and that only Tadashi can pilot Glory in the upcoming assault.

The trio rescues Azusa from a ventilation shaft in an abandoned colony, learns their base has been compromised, and escapes on a large ship. With the Sladers prepared, Tadashi pilots Glory in a decisive battle, destroys the alien vessel, and saves Earth.
