Summary

Mendel Palace stands out as Game Freak’s unexpected debut, crafted by Satoshi Tajiri before the world knew Pokémon. The puzzle‑action playfield is a tidy 5 × 7 tile grid where you flip floor sections to send roaming doll enemies crashing into walls, revealing hidden tiles in the process. Up to two friends can team up, each controlling a colorful boy‑in‑a‑vest as they clear ten‑room palaces, face quirky boss encounters, and even navigate dimly lit rooms that require foresight. The game’s 20 areas host roughly 200 levels, a hefty variety of enemy doll types, and tile patterns that shift strategy from simple pushes to complex stalemates. Despite its modest sales in North America, Mendel Palace remains a noteworthy footnote – the first proof that Tajiri’s tinkering with NES hardware could blossom into a global franchise.

Storyline

In Mendel Palace for the NES, the player must rescue a kidnapped girl. The plot is the same in both regions, but the names differ. In the American release the hero is called Bon‑Bon and he must free Princess Candy, who is trapped inside her own dream. In the Japanese version the protagonist is Carton, whose girlfriend Jenny has been taken by his jealous younger sister Quinty, the titular “Mendel”. Both stories revolve around navigating the palace’s rooms to save the girl.
