Summary

Mega Man (known as Rockman in East Asia) broke the platform mold by letting players pick any of the six robot‑master stages right from the start. Each boss drops a signature weapon with limited ammo, forcing you to plan the order of your runs so that the right weapon is ready for the next challenge. The scoring system rewards points for enemies, power‑ups and stage clears, while the hidden Magnet Beam in Elec Man’s level adds a rare tactical edge.

The six‑person development crew wore many hats: Akira Kitamura set the core concept, Keiji Inafune turned sketches into pixel sprites (drawing inspiration from Astro Boy and choosing blue for its palette depth), and Manami Matsumae composed rock‑flavored chiptunes within a three‑note limit. Early name ideas like “Mighty Kid” and “Rainbow Man” were scrapped in favor of the rock‑and‑roll pun of Rock and Roll, later renamed Mega Man for the U.S. market by senior VP Joseph Morici.

After the six stages, a hidden seventh stage appears, chaining four factory levels where you must reuse the robot‑master weapons without recharging ammo before the final showdown with Dr. Wily. The rushed American cover—showing a yellow‑blue hero with a handgun—has been blamed for the game’s modest early sales, but the innovative level‑select and tight design have cemented Mega Man’s legacy.

Storyline

In the year 200X, Dr. Light’s robots have become a staple of everyday life, but six of his most advanced creations—Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man and Elec Man—go rogue under the influence of his old rival Dr. Wily. Wily hijacks the Robot Masters, builds a Pacific‑based factory, and even produces copies of Light’s designs to fuel his own mechanical empire. The heroic helper robot Rock volunteers to become a fighting machine, renaming himself Mega Man, and sets out to defeat each Robot Master, recover their cores, and shut down Wily’s production line. In the Western version the story is framed around the city of Monsteropolis, where Light and Wily originally co‑developed Mega Man; angry at being denied credit, Wily steals and modifies the six masters, declares the city his empire, and sends waves of robots against humanity. Mega Man battles through the seven heavily‑guarded societies, defeats the altered Robot Masters and finally confronts Dr. Wily in a climactic showdown, restoring peace before returning home.
