Summary

Master Chu & Drunkard Hu is one of those quirky unlicensed NES titles that slipped onto the market in a light‑blue or black cartridge, a hallmark of the Color Dreams era. The game is split into ten distinct rounds; the first seven task you with gathering eight hidden symbols of harmony before hunting down a Flaming Key of Freedom tucked away in the boss’s lair. Rounds eight and nine crank up the pressure by forcing you to defeat the same boss three times for another key, while the final round throws two more bosses at you before the ultimate showdown.

The control scheme is oddly satisfying: A fires energy blasts, B swings a fan for Chu or a knife for Hu to block specific projectiles, and you jump by nudging the D‑pad upward. Scattered power‑ups can heal you, grant temporary invincibility, add extra lives, or boost your shot count—though taking damage will strip that boost away. Even if you run out of lives, the game lets you continue endlessly, though any continue past round seven drops you back to the start of that stage, keeping the challenge fresh.

Storyline

In Master Chu & Drunkard Hu – Dao Shuai (Unl) for the NES, you control Master Chu Liu‑Hsiang, a martial‑arts hero whose village has been cursed by the Hindu god Shiva. Chu’s longtime friend, Master Hu, failed to halt Shiva’s onslaught and has turned to drinking, yet he remains a capable fighter and ally. The game lets you team up in two‑player mode, with Chu and the drunken Hu battling side‑by‑side. By the tenth round the duo faces two additional bosses against a backdrop of Shiva’s looming presence, and after those fights the final showdown with Shiva himself occurs. Defeating Shiva ends the curse and secures victory.
