Summary

Mappy is a side‑scrolling platform game that lets you step into the shoes of a police mouse on a mission to reclaim ten stolen treasures from a cat‑run mansion. The cartoon‑styled world is packed with horizontal corridors, doors that open and close like microwave ovens, and bouncy trampolines that let you hop over prowling felines.

The core loop revolves around snagging items such as stereos, TVs, and even a Mona Lisa replica while avoiding the gang leader Goro and his Meowky henchmen. Stun a cat or collect matching items back‑to‑back and you’ll rack up bonus points, and as you clear stages new attic sections, flashing floor tiles, and drop‑able bells keep the challenge fresh.

A quirky bonus round breaks the tension: you bounce on trampolines to pop balloons for extra score. I love how the simple joystick‑and‑button control feels tight enough for precise jumps yet playful enough to let the chaos unfold.

Since its 1983 arcade debut, Mappy has hopped onto handhelds, the Wii Virtual Console, and modern platforms via Arcade Archives. It even shows up in Pac‑Man World Rally, LittleBigPlanet 3, and a 2013 animated web series, proving the little police mouse still has plenty of charm for new generations.

Storyline

In the original arcade version of Mappy, you play as a police mouse on a mission to retrieve ten stolen items – ranging from stereos and televisions to Mona Lisa paintings, computers and safes – hidden throughout a mansion that serves as a hideout for a gang of thieving cats. The cats are led by the large red Goro and his smaller blue underlings Meowky, and Mappy must bounce across platforms, trampolines and doors while avoiding or stunning the felines to collect every item and clear each round.

The 2013 animated web series Mappy: The Beat picks up after the game’s events, showing Mappy working as a security guard for his former foe Goro’s company Nyamco. He’s joined by fellow Nyamco employees Dig Dug and Sky Kid, along with other Bandai Namco characters, as they navigate a series of workplace antics. The series ran for 13 episodes from July 2013 to January 2014.
