Summary

MagMax drops you into a classic horizontal scrolling shooter where you pilot a hover‑ship that can gradually assemble itself into a towering robot. The transformation isn’t just cosmetic – once the ship becomes the robot you gain extra mobility and the action shifts into full‑blown shooter mode, letting you blast through waves of foes while dodging obstacles on a pseudo‑3D field.

One of the most memorable encounters is the three‑headed mechanical dragon boss, Babylon, whose design is a clear nod to Mecha‑King Ghidorah from the Godzilla movies. Facing that towering beast feels like a showdown straight out of a kaiju film, adding a cinematic flair to the otherwise arcade‑style grind.

Originally a hit in Japanese arcades – even ranking as the second‑most successful table unit in April 1985 – MagMax later made its way to the NES and home computers, and has been revived by Hamster Corporation for modern consoles through the Arcade Archives line on PlayStation 4, Switch, and upcoming Switch 2/PS5 releases.
