Summary

The Krion Conquest (known in Japan as Magical Kids Doropie) lets you wield a wand that changes color with each new ability—red for a standard shot, pink for a phoenix flare, blue for a freeze blast, green for bouncing balls, orange for a shield, and purple for a broom sweep. Unlike early Mega Man titles, you can fire upward, crouch to dodge, and even charge attacks, giving the side‑scroll action a surprisingly fluid feel. Development was a tight ten‑month sprint, originally intended as a licensed Wizard of Oz tie‑in before copyright hurdles forced the team to invent their own heroine, a witch‑clad girl named Doropie who notably lacks eyelashes—a deliberate design choice to keep her cute without typical anime embellishments. The North American release stripped out all but the intro cutscene, removed the continue option, and censored a hexagram symbol at stage ends, reflecting Nintendo of America’s policy against religious imagery at the time. Critics were mixed: Famitsu scored it 23/40, Hippon Super! gave a middling 5/10, and 1up.com praised the Mega Man vibe but found the fun factor lacking.

Storyline

In the NES title Magical Doropie, the story opens in 1999 when the Akudama Empire—known abroad as the Krion Empire—launches a sudden robot invasion of Earth. Conventional weapons prove useless, but the machines are completely vulnerable to magic, prompting the mercenary Kagemaru to summon the only unsealed witch, Doropie (called Francesca outside Japan). Doropie storms the empire’s hidden bases and discovers that the army is commanded by the Machine God Emperor, an old nemesis she had sealed away in the human world.

The Emperor captures Kagemaru and forces Doropie to break the seal that had imprisoned her. Believing Kagemaru dead, Doropie battles the now‑free Empress Elysia aboard the empire’s space warship. In the climactic fight, the dying Empress confesses the invasion was retaliation for humanity’s destruction of nature, then the ship explodes.

Doropie escapes the wreckage, is contacted by a surviving Kagemaru, and returns to Earth, bringing the magical threat to an end.
