Summary

Totally Rad, the Western name for the NES title Magic John, blends classic side‑scrolling platforming with an action‑adventure vibe. You’ll face a parade of boss battles that range from straightforward to surprisingly intricate, and the game even lets you summon special abilities to turn the tide. One of the quirkiest design choices is the unlimited continue system – you can lose lives over and over, and the only true Game Over comes if you decline to continue.

The character roster shifts between regions: the Japanese version stars two pre‑adolescent, cartoon‑style friends, while the Western release swaps them for laid‑back Californian teens. This cultural swap gives each version a distinct visual flavor without altering the core gameplay.

Developed by Aicom and published by Jaleco, the title remains a hidden gem for NES collectors, offering a surprisingly deep experience hidden behind its bright, retro packaging.

Storyline

In the NES platformer Magic John, the protagonist Jake – called John in the Japanese version – is hired as an apprentice magician by the eccentric Zebediah Pong. While training, a group of mysterious attackers ambush the lab and kidnap his girlfriend Allison (Yuu in Japan). Determined to uncover their motives, Jake sets out on a quest to track the culprits and learn why they targeted Allison. He soon discovers the kidnapping was a ruse designed to force Allison’s father, a renowned scientist, out of hiding. The final showdown sees Jake rescuing the scientist and confronting an evil king who intends to unleash a subterranean army against the world Jake knows.
