Summary

The NES version of Lode Runner feels like a fresh spin on Doug Smith’s classic while still honoring the core puzzle‑platform mechanics. You guide a stick‑figure through brick‑filled stages, digging holes on either side to trap the quirky guards who can snatch gold but never carry more than one bar. Timing is everything—holes refill quickly, and a guard can drop the stolen loot before re‑emerging at the top of the screen.

What really sets the cartridge apart is its 50 scrolling levels, cartoon‑style graphics, and a quirky soundtrack that wasn’t in the original. Random fruits and vegetables pop up for bonus points, and the game even throws in Bombermen as robotic foes, a nod you’ll spot on the end‑screen.

The built‑in level editor was groundbreaking, though only Japanese players could actually save their creations via the Family BASIC tape drive; the US version left that feature unusable, turning level‑building into a fleeting, on‑the‑fly experiment.
