Summary
The Little Mermaid on NES (and its Game Boy twin) feels like a splashy side‑scroll adventure that leans into Disney’s aquatic charm while tossing in classic Capcom action. You guide Ariel through six distinct underwater realms—Coral Sea, Sunken Ship, Sea of Ice, Undersea Volcano, and the two showdown stages at Ursula’s Castle—each introduced by a brief descent from the top of the screen that sets the stage for the level’s music. Bubbles are Ariel’s primary weapon; you can trap enemies, launch them, and upgrade the bubbles’ power and range by cracking open treasure chests you uncover while digging through sand with collected shells. Scattered icons refill health, grant extra lives, or boost bubble reach, keeping the pacing lively as you dodge eels, sharks, walruses and the odd Soldierfish.
The soundtrack even slips in the Academy‑Award‑winning “Under the Sea,” and the NES version’s BGM runs noticeably faster than its Game Boy counterpart, with boss themes differing in key scale. A quirky visual cue turns a lost heart into a heart‑frame, adding a retro‑era polish. The game sold half a million copies by the end of 1991, resonating especially with female players, and earned respectable scores across magazines—from a 27/40 in Electronic Gaming Monthly to a 7/10 in VideoGame. Its 1997 Player’s Choice re‑release on Game Boy cemented its status as a nostalgic family favorite.
Storyline
In the NES platformer The Little Mermaid, Ariel has already traded her fins for legs and fallen for Prince Eric, but trouble bubbles beneath the surface. Ursula, the malevolent Witch of the Sea, has cursed every sea creature, threatening to seize control of the ocean unless she’s stopped. Determined to rescue her friends, Ariel plunges back into the water, regaining her mermaid form to confront the sorceress. The adventure leads her to Ursula’s dark palace, where the witch unleashes a barrage of treacherous tricks and magical attacks. Ariel must battle through these hazards and defeat Ursula before the sea is lost forever.
