Summary

The Lion King on the NES feels like a love letter to Disney’s animation studio. I’m always amazed that the sprites and backgrounds were actually drawn by Disney animators, and the soundtrack pulls straight from the film’s iconic score. The game’s side‑scrolling action lets you guide Simba from cub to adult, with a roar meter that you can charge to stun foes or solve puzzles, and later a set of combat moves like scratches and throws. Collecting bugs not only restores health but also fills the roar gauge, and hidden bugs unlock quirky bonus stages starring Timon and Pumbaa. Checkpoints and Circle‑of‑Life icons act as continues, a clever nod to the movie’s theme. Fun fact: the NES version, built by Dark Technologies, was the console’s final official release in Europe and only ever appeared in PAL territories.

Storyline

The Lion King (NES) follows Simba’s journey from a young cub to his adult battle with the evil uncle Scar, retelling the film’s key events as he matures.

Driven into the wilderness by Scar, Simba finds salvation with Pumbaa the warthog and Timon the meerkat, where his education and growth truly begin.
