Summary

Life Force, known in the arcades as Salamander, stands out on the NES for its blend of horizontal and vertical scrolling stages and a surprisingly deep two‑player co‑op. I love that the first pilot flies the classic Vic Viper while the second pilots the debuting Lord British, letting friends team up without the usual solo grind. The six‑stage run swaps direction on each level, and the power‑up system is stripped down but still strategic – the American version renames Speed‑Up to Hyper Speed, Missiles to Destruct Missiles, Ripple Laser to Pulse Laser, and Force Field to Shield, and it trims the option pods from three down to two. A hidden Konami Code cranks the life count from three to thirty, turning a tough run into a marathon. Critics still cite the fire‑stage graphics as "mind‑blowing" back in the day, and Electronic Gaming Monthly placed the game 76th on its all‑time console list. The title resurfaced on Wii, 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console releases, and the European box even carries the subtitle "Life Force: Salamander."

Storyline

Life Force (also released as Salamander) picks up after the Gradius saga, when the hero has already driven the Bacterions from the galaxy. A new menace, the planet‑eating alien Zelos, spreads a deadly bacterial plague and threatens to devour everything.
In the American version the action is framed as a mission inside the alien’s own body, with each stage set in a different organ‑like zone. Starfield backdrops were swapped for a web‑like texture, and a brief narration tells you where you are – for example, “Enter stomach muscle zone” or “Bio‑mechanical brain attack.”
You’re not alone: a starfighter from the planet Latis joins you in a RoadBritish destroyer, and together you hunt for ripple lasers, plutonic missiles and force‑field upgrades. The ultimate goal is to blast through the creature’s traps, reach its core and blow out its heart.
