Summary
Ghost Lion (known in Japan as White Lion Densetsu: Pyramid no Kanata ni) is a 1989 NES role‑playing game that pulls its inspiration from an unlikely source—a 1988 film of the same name. Its most striking feature is the combat system: Maria can attack directly or summon spirit allies via items, and battles reward money rather than experience points. Character growth relies on uncovering hidden "Miracles" in treasure chests, which boost three core stats—Hope (level), Courage (HP), and Dream (MP).
The world feels open‑ended, but the plot follows a tight, linear path driven by dialogue and exploration. Saving and healing are performed at scattered fairy springs instead of conventional inns, and fights play out in classic turn‑based, menu‑driven fashion reminiscent of Dragon Quest. These quirks give Ghost Lion a distinctive charm that stands out among NES RPGs.
Storyline
The Legend of the Ghost Lion opens with a spectral White Lion rampaging through Maria’s village. A wandering hero manages to chase the beast away, but the incident spurs Maria’s parents to investigate its origin and purpose. They set out on a quest and never come back, leaving Maria determined to find them. When she finally follows their trail, a bridge collapses beneath her and a fierce river sweeps her away. She awakens in an unfamiliar realm, where she must search for her missing parents, a way home, and the enigmatic White Lion that started it all.
