Summary

Layla is a side‑scrolling action title that forces you to keep moving left‑to‑right – there’s no way to turn back once the screen has scrolled. Each of the eight asteroids is split into a surface segment and an underground base, and you must hunt down password disks while blasting through cavern‑like corridors. At the end of every base a boss awaits, and the final enemy must be taken down twice – first its neck, then its body – before the game truly ends.

Your starter handgun is quickly outclassed by stronger guns and a handful of hand grenades you can discover by exploring, but every shot counts because ammunition is limited. Some blocks look solid but can be shattered with the right weapon, though telling the difference isn’t always obvious. Scattered bonus stages let you rip through entire squadrons of enemy ships while remaining completely invulnerable, offering a brief, satisfying power‑trip.

When your life bar empties, you lose a life and the game presents a password so you can pick up where you left off. Critics noted the game’s cute heroine, giving Famitsu a series of 5‑10‑7‑7‑7 scores and Marukatsu FC an 11‑out‑of‑15 overall.

Storyline

Layla, the 17‑year‑old heroine of the NES title Layla, is a member of the CAT Special Forces. Inspired by the sci‑fi duo Dirty Pair, she must rescue her teammate Iris, who has been captured by the villainous Dr. Manitoka. The quest sends her across eight asteroids, each split into a surface stage and a hidden enemy base. The kidnapping involves a genetically modified apparatus called Jill, which Dr. Manitoka uses to control Iris. Armed with the full range of CAT training, Layla battles through alien terrain and high‑tech defenses. Her goal is to foil Dr. Manitoka’s plans and bring Iris safely back.
