Summary

Kung Fu arrived on the NES as Nintendo’s polished version of the 1984 arcade hit Spartan X. Directed by Shigeru Miyamoto and featuring sound work by Koji Kondo, the title quickly became a household name, selling about 3.5 million copies worldwide and topping U.S. sales charts in both July and September 1986. Its appeal lay in a tight blend of responsive controls and crisp 8‑bit presentation that still feels fresh today. Even today fans recall it as one of the earliest true beat ’em ups on a home console.
The game puts you in the shoes of the unnamed kung‑fu master who punches, kicks and jumps through five increasingly tough stages called the Devil’s Temple. Enemies range from basic grippers to knife‑throwers, each draining a visible health meter that encourages careful timing over button‑mashing. Each floor must be cleared before time runs out, and the end of a floor triggers a one‑on‑one boss duel complete with its own health bar. Bonus points reward the speed and energy you keep, rewarding an extra life at 50 000 points. All of this is handled with just the D‑pad and two buttons, making the challenge feel immediate and accessible.

Storyline

In the NES classic Kung Fu, the player controls Thomas, a kung‑fu master clad in a sleeveless white keikogi. A cryptic letter arrives, warning that his beloved Sylvia has been seized and locked inside the Devil’s Temple. Determined to save her, Thomas begins his ascent of a five‑level pagoda.
Each floor is guarded by the “sons of the devil,” a series of martial foes that must be defeated to progress. At the summit, Thomas confronts the shadowy crime lord known only as Mr. X, defeats him, and frees Sylvia. The game then restarts, challenging the player with a higher difficulty setting.
