Summary
The Krion Conquest (known in Japan as Magical Kids Doropie) feels like a love‑letter to Mega Man, but with a few twists that set it apart. You pick up a wand that changes color with each outfit, turning the character into a red‑shot blaster, a pink phoenix, a blue freezer, a green bouncing‑ball shooter, an orange shield bearer, or a purple broom‑rider, and you can even fire straight up or charge attacks—features that didn’t appear in the early Mega Man titles until later.
Behind the scenes, the game was originally meant to be a licensed tie‑in to the 1986 Wonderful Wizard of Oz anime, but copyright snags forced the team to invent Doropie, a witch‑clad heroine without eyelashes. Development wrapped in about ten months, and the final stage was trimmed due to cartridge memory limits.
The North American release stripped out the continue system, most cutscenes, and a hexagram graphic that Nintendo of America deemed too religious, giving the title a leaner, albeit slightly censored, presentation compared to its Japanese counterpart.
Storyline
In 1999 the Akudama Empire—known outside Japan as the Krion Empire—suddenly attacks Earth with a legion of robots that no conventional weapon can stop, but which are completely vulnerable to magic. A hired mercenary named Kagemaru summons the only non‑sealed witch, Doropie (called Francesca in the Western release), to confront the threat. Doropie storms the empire’s hidden bases, only to discover that the army is commanded by the Machine God Emperor, a being she had previously sealed away in the human world.
The Emperor kidnaps Kagemaru and blackmails Doropie into breaking her seal; Kagemaru appears to die from his injuries, yet Doropie presses on to stop the now‑free Machine God Emperor. After a climactic showdown aboard the Akudama Empire’s space base, the dying Emperor confesses that the invasion was a retaliation for humanity’s destruction of nature. The base detonates, Doropie escapes, and Kagemaru—miraculously still alive—contacts her, allowing her to return to Earth.
Krion Conquest thus weaves a tale of ancient witches, a mercenary’s sacrifice, and a desperate fight against a mechanized god bent on punishing a world that has harmed the natural order.
