Summary
The King of Kings (unofficially just "King of Kings") is a curious NES platformer that lives on the fringe of the console’s library, released by the Bible‑centric label Wisdom Tree. It’s divided into three bite‑size adventures that each dramatize an early episode from Jesus’ life, and the whole experience feels like a retro Sunday school lesson wrapped in 8‑bit graphics.
Your health is measured in scrolls, and the only way to stock up is to answer trivia pulled straight from the King James Version. After picking a game you can toggle between Easy and Normal difficulty and decide whether the soundtrack stays on, turning the title into a low‑pressure quiz‑plus‑run.
In the Wise Men stage you ride a camel that spits projectiles, while the Flight to Egypt segment puts you on a donkey that kicks as the level spirals upward. The final chapter lets you control Saint Joseph with extra vertical movement, and each stage is scored by a different Christmas carol – “We Three Kings,” “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” and “What Child Is This?” – adding a festive soundtrack to the biblical quest.
Storyline
King of Kings (unlicensed NES version v1.1) lets players relive the early life of Christ through three distinct stages. In The Wise Men, you control each of the three Magi in turn, gathering their traditional gifts—gold, frankincense and myrrh—while picking up scrolls that pose King James Bible questions. The second stage, Flight to Egypt, puts you in the shoes of Joseph, Mary and the infant Jesus as you guide the holy family across a perilous route to escape King Herod’s wrath. The final segment, Jesus and the Temple, follows Joseph’s frantic search through Jerusalem for his twelve‑year‑old son who has stayed behind in the temple. Across all three episodes the game emphasizes the fulfillment of prophecy and the reverence of Christ’s birth and childhood.
