Summary
Kid Icarus blends classic side‑scrolling action with light RPG touches, letting me guide Pit through a series of two‑dimensional stages. His bow fires an endless stream of arrows, but only when I boost it with the Protective Crystal, Flaming Arrows, or the Sacred Bow—upgrades that demand a healthy life bar. Points collected along the way raise Pit’s health, rewarding careful exploration and high scores.
The world is split into three realms—Underworld, Overworld (Earth) and Skyworld—each offering three area levels and a fortress. Fortresses act as maze‑like hubs of static rooms where a gatekeeper boss guards one of three sacred treasures needed for the final sky temple. Scattered doors lead to stores, treasure rooms, enemy nests, hot springs, the god’s chamber, and a training area, each providing items, hearts, or power‑ups.
The NES cartridge version swapped the original Disk System’s save feature for a password system, added staff credits and refreshed the ending graphics. Decades later the game resurfaced on the NES Classic Edition in 2016, introducing a new generation to Pit’s quest against Medusa’s army.
Storyline
Kid Icarus – Angel Land Story takes place in Angel Land, a fantasy realm inspired by Greek mythology. The goddess of Light, Palutena, once bathed the people in light, while the goddess of Darkness, Medusa, cursed the crops and turned humans to stone. In retaliation Palutena transformed Medusa into a monster and banished her to the Underworld, but Medusa rallied the Underworld’s monsters, seized the Palace in the Sky and stole the three Sacred Treasures – the Mirror Shield, the Light Arrows and the Wings of Pegasus – leaving Palutena imprisoned deep within the palace. With her last strength she sent a bow and arrow to the young angel Pit, who escapes his Underworld prison to begin his rescue mission.
Pit must recover each of the Sacred Treasures from the gatekeepers of three fortresses: one in the Underworld, one in the Overworld, and one in the Skyworld. After gathering the Mirror Shield, Light Arrows, and Pegasus Wings, he equips the items and storms the sky temple. There he defeats Medusa and frees Palutena, restoring light to Angel Land. The game offers five possible endings, ranging from Pit receiving a headpiece to being transformed into a full‑grown angel, depending on the player’s performance.
In the Japanese version the top ending from the English release is omitted and replaced with an additional bad ending, but the core story of rescuing Palutena and reclaiming the Sacred Treasures remains the same.
