Summary
Kick Master stands out on the NES as a tight 2‑D action platformer that blends martial‑arts kicks with elemental magic. The game’s eight straight‑forward stages each end with a distinct boss, demanding quick reflexes and clever spell use.
As you defeat foes, you gain experience; each level‑up expands Thonolan’s MP pool and unlocks fresh techniques, giving a subtle RPG feel to the run‑and‑kick rhythm. Enemies leave behind three possible items—some power‑ups, some curses—that can either boost your stats or suddenly set you back, adding a layer of risk to every encounter.
Visually, the dark corridors and gothic sprites echo early Castlevania titles, and the contemporary GamePro review praised its smooth controls and surprising depth.
Storyline
In Kick Master, the kingdom of Lowrel is shattered when the witch Belzed burns the castle, slaying the King and Queen and snatching Princess Silphee. Only the knight Macren and his younger brother Thonolan survive; Macren dies after a skeleton wound, urging Thonolan to use his legendary kicking skills.
Thonolan, the youngest and most talented Kick Master, must trek through eight distinct locations, battling Belzed’s fanatical minions and overcoming three difficulty levels. Along the way he confronts the wizard’s army, gathers magical power, and finally reaches Belzed’s tower.
When the final battle ends, Belzed is destroyed, the princess is rescued, and Thonolan sets the tower ablaze before vanishing forever. The game then offers a chance to replay at a higher difficulty, and the credits roll after the third level is completed.
