Summary

Karateka, the 1984 martial‑arts action title that first appeared on the Apple II, feels like a love letter to classic cinema. Jordan Mechner, then a Yale student, built the game between classes, borrowing rotoscoping techniques from his karate instructor’s moves and layering them with the visual flair of ukiyo‑e prints, Kurosawa films, and even early Disney cartoons. The result is a fluid, side‑scrolling adventure where health bars shrink with each hit but slowly recover if you dodge long enough, and where a hawk sent by the villain Akuma can be deflected with perfectly timed strikes.

The original floppy even hid an Easter egg: flip the disk upside down and the whole game runs reflected vertically, a quirky nod to the era’s experimental spirit. After its modest debut, Karateka spread to dozens of platforms—from the Atari 7800 and Commodore 64 to the NES and Game Boy—showcasing how a small, student‑run project could become a cross‑continental hit. Critics praised its animation and sound, noting the surprising depth of its combat despite the simple graphics, and the title earned a Gold certification for surpassing 100,000 sales, eventually topping half a million copies worldwide.

Storyline

In Karateka you play as an unnamed karate master who must climb a craggy cliff and infiltrate the fortress of the evil warlord Akuma. The hero ascends a mountain, confronting a single foe on each screen while cinematic cuts reveal Princess Mariko’s plight and Akuma’s cruel plans. Deep within the darkest dungeon the player finally battles Akuma himself before reaching Mariko’s cell. Approaching her while still in a fighting stance triggers an instant‑death kick, so only a calm, non‑combat stance allows the rescue. The game ends with the hero and Princess Mariko escaping together, having proven the way of the Karateka.
