Summary

The Legend of Kage (often just called Legend of Kage) feels like a love‑letter to old‑school ninja action, but with a few quirks that set the NES version apart. You guide Kage through a looping set of five side‑scrolling stages—forest, moat, castle interior and exterior—that recycle as the seasons shift from summer to fall to winter and back again, each rescue of Princess Kirihime triggering the change.

Gameplay leans on a tight, one‑hit‑kill formula: Kage can vault absurdly high, cling to and climb trees, block with his kodachi, and pepper enemies with an endless stream of shuriken. A hidden crystal ball lets you swap his red garb for green or orange, granting larger shuriken or a speed boost, and if you get hit while dressed that way you simply revert to red instead of dying.

Two players can take turns, but the challenge is relentless—one mistake ends the run. Though critics panned it at launch, the title found a second life on Nintendo’s Virtual Console (Wii in ’06/’07, later on 3DS and Wii U), letting a new generation experience its seasonal ninja sprint.

Storyline

Kage no Densetsu (sometimes called Shadow Legend) follows a young Iga ninja named Kage—literally “Shadow”—who is tasked with rescuing Princess Kirihime, the Shogun’s daughter, from the warlord Yoshi and the evil samurai Yuki. The game has Kage battling his way through a forest, a secret passageway, a fortress wall, and finally a castle. Each rescue occurs as the seasons change, cycling from summer to fall to winter and back again.

The core narrative is Kage’s relentless quest to defeat Yoshi, Yuki, and their forces and to save the princess. Players control the skillful ninja Kage, as described by TheGamesDB, on this classic NES adventure.
