Summary
Metal Storm (often just called Metal Storm) feels like a secret weapon hidden in the NES’s final days. The whole game revolves around flipping the M‑308 Gunner mech between floor and ceiling with a simple button combo, turning every corridor into a spatial puzzle where enemies, laser emitters and crushing blocks react to your orientation. Six stages split into two acts each, plus a boss‑rush finale, force you to master that gravity switch while juggling just three power‑ups – a Power Beam, a Shield and a temporary invincibility fireball – so movement becomes the true weapon.
What really blew my mind was how the developers squeezed simulated parallax scrolling onto an 8‑bit board. A custom mapper chip and clever bank‑switching let two background layers scroll at different speeds, giving the game a depth that most NES titles could only dream of. The sprites are huge and fluid, especially the multi‑part mecha bosses that look ripped from classic anime, and the gravity‑flip sound effect still rings clear after decades.
Released in early 1991 with a Nintendo Power cover and a 12‑page strategy guide, the title sank commercially as the market rushed toward the SNES. The Japanese version arrived a year later, polishing the palette, adding a cinematic intro and restoring full credits, essentially serving as a director’s cut.
Retro‑Bit’s 2019 re‑release finally gave the game a proper English translation and a collectible figurine, sparking a resurgence that has turned Metal Storm into a prized collector’s item and a celebrated hidden gem among modern retro fans.
Storyline
In the year 2501 humanity has spread across the Solar System, and a defensive outpost on Pluto houses a massive robotic laser cannon designed to shield Earth from alien invaders. The cannon malfunctions, flips on its creators, and begins wiping out planets, with Neptune its latest victim. Earth’s forces cannot activate the base’s self‑destruct, so the only hope lies with the M‑308 Gunner, the most advanced combat mech available. In Juuryoku Soukou Metal Storm (often called Metal Storm), you pilot this mech to storm the Pluto facility and manually trigger the self‑destruct before the weapon can annihilate Earth.
After defeating the final boss, the leaders of Earth grant the M‑308 Gunner immortality and assign it the ongoing duty of protecting humanity from any future threats, cementing its role as the galaxy’s ultimate guardian.
