Summary
Journey to Silius started life as a tie‑in for The Terminator, but Sunsoft lost the license halfway through development. The missing rights forced a redesign, yet the final boss still looks oddly like the film’s end‑machine, giving the game an accidental homage.
The NES title, known in Japan as Rough World, switches the hero’s look between versions: the North‑American release shows an exposed face, while overseas releases cloak him in full armor. Gameplay follows classic side‑scrolling run‑and‑gun conventions, letting you lie down and fire left or right. Along the way you collect five special weapons—shotgun, machine gun, homing gun, laser rifle, grenade launcher—each draining a dedicated Gun Energy meter before the handgun defaults back. Health and ammo are restored through energy capsules dropped by enemies.
Musically, Naoki Kodaka’s soundtrack stands out; he uses the digital channel for a sampled bassline and the triangle channel for a kick drum, a technique rare among NES composers.
Storyline
Journey to Silius is set in the year 373 of the New Space Age calendar, a time when Earth’s overpopulation has sparked a rush to colonize the stars. Jay McCray, the son of a lead scientist on space colony #428 in the Silius Solar System, is about to follow his father’s footsteps when the colony is suddenly destroyed in a massive explosion, killing the entire research team and erasing all onboard data.
While searching his father’s home, Jay discovers a floppy disk that holds the complete colony plans and a personal video message urging him to finish the project if terrorists are responsible. Determined to protect the Silius colony blueprint and avenge his father’s death, he straps on his combat suit and sets out on a lone mission.
The game follows Jay as he battles the terrorist forces across alien landscapes, retrieving the lost data and fighting to ensure humanity’s future among the stars.
