Summary

Kabuki: Quantum Fighter (Jigoku Gokurakumaru) feels like a love‑letter to classic ninja platformers, but with a few quirky twists that set it apart. Your character’s long red hair doubles as a whip, letting you strike enemies from a distance while you dash through the side‑scrolling corridors of a supercomputer‑filled space station. The arsenal is equally eccentric: an Energy Gun, Fusion Gun, Quantum Bombs and even a remote‑controlled Bolo give the combat a sci‑fi punch. Visually, the game shines with detailed sprites that earned an 85‑point graphics rating, though the chiptune soundtrack draws a lower 53, a point noted by reviewers. Nintendo Power and CVG both praised the challenge and lasting appeal, noting that once you adapt to its steep difficulty curve, the experience becomes oddly satisfying.

Storyline

In the year 2056 a mysterious computer virus has infected Earth’s main defense system, threatening global security. The outbreak’s origin and nature are unknown, and the virus behaves like a biological contaminant, leaving behind debris, mutant creatures, and parasitic environments within the digital realm.

Jigoku Gokuraku Maru puts players in the shoes of 25‑year‑old Colonel Scott O'Connor, a military agent who volunteers to have his mind converted into raw binary code. Inside the mainframe his avatar takes the form of his great‑great‑grandfather, a kabuki actor, turning the lone warrior into a digital kabuki warrior.

As O'Connor battles deeper, the final level reveals the virus is alien, hitchhiking on the lost Hyperion probe sent to a neighboring planet. He manages to stop the rogue program before it can command the Hyperion to fire its laser weapons and wipe out humanity.
