Summary

Jesus: Kyōfu no Bio Monster started as a graphic adventure from a tiny Enix crew. Freelance writer Koji Miya supplied the script, while Takanari Suzuki handled the code and even slipped his 1981 hobby project Space Mouse into the game as a hidden minigame. Artist Shintaro Majima cranked out more than 150 hand‑drawn images, giving the title a surprisingly rich visual feel. The soundtrack was composed by Koichi Sugiyama and cheekily borrows the overworld theme from the original Dragon Quest, a nod that fans of the series instantly recognize.

When Chunsoft adapted the game for the Famicom, King Records published it on March 17, 1989, but the console version is a stripped‑down experience. Game‑overs, puzzles, and the more adult‑oriented scenes were removed, and the robot companion FOJY was turned into comic relief; its name is a playful reference to Enix, each letter shifted one step away.

The story revolves around a space station called J.E.S.U.S., literally shaped like the double‑edged sword described in the Book of Revelation, and its crew must confront a demonic alien hitching a ride on Halley’s Comet. The title’s blend of biblical imagery and sci‑fi horror gives the game a uniquely unsettling vibe that still stands out among late‑80s adventure titles.

Storyline

The NES title *Jesus – Kyoufu no Bio Monster* (often just called “Jesus”) is set in the year 2061, when Halley’s Comet is on a close approach to Mars. Earth’s nations launch a joint expedition from the space station J.E.S.U.S., splitting the crew into two ships, the Nebula and the Corona, to collect comet‑tail gas and test the idea that comets seeded life on Earth.

Space‑lab technician Musou Hayao is tasked with tracking down the crew members who receive access cards for the mission. He meets seven specialists—a Chinese doctor, a German captain, a Soviet captain, an American xenobiologist, a French mathematician‑and‑love‑interest named Eline, an Italian computer engineer, and a Brazilian astronomer—before the ships depart two weeks apart.

When Hayao reaches Halley’s comet, he discovers most of the crew dead or dying, whispering warnings about a xenomorph‑like alien that cannot be harmed by fire. With the help of Eline’s intelligent robot pet Fojii, Hayao finds the creature, a sample of its skin, and eventually confronts it using Eline’s song, which the monster finds unbearable.

The alien reveals it has absorbed the DNA and memories of the slain crew, speaking a garbled mix of their languages and planning to head for J.E.S.U.S. to evolve humanity. Hayao and Eline manage to jettison the monster into space, hearing the voices of their fallen colleagues promise that humanity will one day face this new breed again when Halley returns.
