Summary

JaJaMaru: Ninpō Chō, later released in English as Ninja JajaMaru: Ninja Skill Book, finally made its way onto the NES in 2023 after decades of limbo. The game flips the series on its head: where the earlier JaJaMaru titles were pure platformers, this third Famicom entry embraces a classic turn‑based JRPG format, complete with a world map, towns, dungeons, and random encounters that shift you to a separate combat screen. A curious footnote for retro fans is that an English prototype titled Taro's Quest was slated for a 1990 North American launch, but the project was shelved, leaving only an incomplete ROM as evidence. When the official localization finally arrived, the graphics were largely redrawn to look more realistic, shedding the original’s cartoonish charm. It’s a rare glimpse of a hidden piece of Jaleco’s Ninja JaJaMaru‑kun legacy, now finally playable for modern audiences.
