Summary

Insector X is a fast‑paced horizontal shooter that drops you into a buzzing insect empire where every enemy looks like a mechanized beetle. You pilot Kai – called Yanmer in the arcade – a tiny warrior armed with an upgradable primary shot and a second button that cycles through a surprisingly varied arsenal of secondary weapons. The Famicom conversion, handled by Hot‑B for Taito, stays true to the arcade’s frantic pace while trimming a few details for the home console. When it first hit Japanese arcades, Game Machine ranked it the 24th most‑successful table unit in October 1989, and reviewers praised its vivid backgrounds, crisp animation and punchy soundtrack. Console XS gave it a soaring 94 %, while MegaTech noted solid graphics and sound but wished for more originality, and Raze settled on an 80 % score, highlighting the detailed scenery and intricate character designs. The game’s tagline sums it up nicely: “They’re gonna bug ya… to death!”

Storyline

In Insector X for the NES, you step into the shoes of an insect‑sized warrior called Kai (the arcade version calls him Yanmer). Kai’s mission is to battle a massive horde of cyborg insects that have taken over the insect realm. The ultimate goal is to overthrow the dark ruler queen who commands the mechanical swarm. The game mixes side‑scroll shooting with platforming as you navigate tiny environments that feel huge from Kai’s perspective. Victory means freeing the insect world from her tyrannical grip.
