Summary

The Immortal is an isometric action‑adventure that drops you into a sprawling, seven‑level labyrinth on the NES. Progress feels like a puzzle of trial and error – you stumble into a trap, die, learn its pattern, and move on, memorizing each hazard until the whole map clicks together.

Magic is both a blessing and a curse: fireball spells clear the way in the open isometric view, but once you touch an enemy you’re forced into a combat mode where you must dodge, swing a sword, or stab. Certain items can kill you instantly if used wrong, while a wandering merchant sells useful trinkets for gold you loot from chests or fallen foes. Some levels even let you glide on a flying carpet, levitate, or paddle a floating barrel.

The game’s brutal difficulty is balanced by a strange curiosity; each new trap you master feels rewarding. It earned a solid 21/25 from GamePro and even resurfaced in 2020 on Nintendo’s Classics service, proving that its maddening charm still resonates.

Storyline

The Immortal (often just called The Immortal) drops you into an isometric nightmare of eight dungeon levels, where you play an elderly wizard on a desperate quest to find your vanished mentor, Mordamir. A frantic message from the deep reaches you, urging rescue of the master who vanished under mysterious circumstances. With only a staff and a few potions, you descend into the labyrinth, hoping the darkness will reveal his fate. The game's tagline even warns you that you’re not truly immortal.

The winding corridors are populated by warring goblins and trolls; sparing the goblin king earns their allegiance, turning them into useful allies. Along the way you meet Ulindor, a loyal bodyguard, and a shadowy merchant who sells magical items and restorative brews. Hostile creatures range from invisible shades and flying lizards to will‑o‑the‑wisps, flesh‑eating slimes, giant worms, a colossal spider and a strange water norfalc. Resting on scattered straw beds triggers vivid dreams of an ancient dragon‑filled civilization and the walled city of Erinoch, famed for its fountains of youth. These visions hint at a forgotten war between dragons and humans that still echoes through the dungeon.

Near the bottom you discover a dying Dunric, who reveals that Mordamir never was imprisoned; instead he kidnapped Dunric’s daughter to lure him into a trap, and the merchant you’ve been buying from is actually Mordamir in disguise. A final revelation shows that the city’s army slaughtered all but one dragon, which now seeks vengeance on Erinoch. Mordamir, the last survivor of his own people after a millennium, and the lone dragon confront you in a climactic battle. The outcome decides whether the wizard’s legacy ends in triumph or eternal oblivion.
