Summary
Hudson's Adventure Island, often just called Adventure Island, drops you onto a lush tropical island where you start with nothing but your wits. The moment you step ashore you’re already hunting for food and tools, because every bite of fruit or sip of milk restores the health gauge that constantly drains as you run.
The only way to defend yourself is to locate the stone axe hidden in each stage; once you’ve got it you can trade it for fireballs that blast through rocks and rolling stones. Those fireballs also let you smash the occasional egg, which may hide a bonus item—or a dreaded eggplant that saps your life meter. Keep an eye out for the honey‑girl fairy; a brief burst of invincibility lets you turn the tables on the island’s critters.
Each area culminates in a showdown with the Evil Witch Doctor, who cycles through eight increasingly tough forms. The number of head‑hits required climbs from eight to twenty‑two, and his speed and fireball attacks ramp up with each transformation.
If you manage to clear a stage, a hidden pot doubles your end‑of‑stage bonus, and secret clouds can whisk you to a fruit‑filled bonus round where you can rack up points without risking a life.
Storyline
Hudson's Adventure Island on the NES follows Master Higgins – known as Master Wigins in the UK, Capulinita in Mexico, and Takahashi Meijin in Japan – as he journeys to the South Pacific after learning that the Evil Witch Doctor has kidnapped Princess Tina (also referred to as Princess Leilani). Determined to rescue her, Higgins must brave the island’s perils. The game’s story is simple but drives the action through all 32 stages.
The island is divided into eight distinct areas, each called an “area,” and every area contains four rounds. Each round is further split into four checkpoints, giving the player frequent places to regroup. When Higgins reaches the fourth round of an area, a boss battle awaits, and defeating the boss opens the path to the next area. This pattern repeats until the final confrontation.
After surviving all eight areas and defeating the eighth and final form of the Evil Witch Doctor, Higgins rescues the princess and the game ends. The clear objective and steady progression make the storyline easy to follow while still providing a sense of adventure. Fans of retro platformers still recall this straightforward rescue plot fondly.
