Summary

Honoo no Doukyuuji: Dodge Danpei brings the frantic energy of a Japanese dodgeball manga straight onto the Famicom screen. Sunsoft translated Tetsuhiro Koshita’s panel‑by‑panel chaos into a fast‑paced sports title that feels more like a playground showdown than a traditional video game. Players dash, duck, and launch rubber balls across a simple yet surprisingly strategic court, with each match demanding split‑second timing and a knack for reading opponents’ moves. The game’s pixel art captures the manga’s exaggerated characters, while the chiptune soundtrack pumps up the competitive vibe. A year later Sunsoft followed up with a sequel, Honoo no Doukyuuji: Dodge Danpei 2, expanding the same wild dodgeball formula for fans hungry for more.

Storyline

In Honoo no Doukyuuji – Dodge Danpei, the protagonist Danpei Ichigeki is a kid who lives and breathes dodgeball, and he can’t wait to join his school’s dodgeball club as soon as he starts elementary school. On the morning of the entrance ceremony, Danpei pays a quiet visit to the grave of his father, Danjuro, a legendary dodgeball player, and accidentally knocks the gravestone over with a powerful throw. Inside the toppled stone he discovers a lone ball, which he immediately assumes is a gift from his late dad. Determined to follow in his father’s footsteps, Danpei tackles the club’s notoriously tough entrance exam. After passing, he finally becomes a member of the dodgeball club, ready to chase the legacy left by Danjuro.
