Summary
Holy Diver finally broke its Japan‑only shackles in 2018 when Retro‑Bit pressed a limited run of 2,900 NES cartridges for the global market. The collector’s edition, priced at $60, comes in a hard‑embossed box with pins, stickers, art prints and a notebook, while the standard version sells for $35 and also appears on the Super Retro‑Cade micro‑console. The game is infamous for its brutal difficulty – six stages of forests, castles and caverns, each ending in a boss fight, and a relentless barrage of gargoyles and flying eyeballs that you meet with an infinite supply of fireballs. Along the way you hunt the Five Crimson Family Seals (Twin Fire, Blizzard, Rock Breaker, Overdrive, Thunder) and gear like the Bracelet, Jump Boots, Wizard’s Staff and Cape of Protection. Its HUD mimics Zelda II, its graphics borrow from Getsu Fūma Den and even a Contra‑style stage, earning it the nickname “the Castlevania clone.” Reviewers have praised the challenge, with Destructoid giving a positive nod despite Famitsu’s modest 22/40 score.
Storyline
Holy Diver takes place in the 666th year of a magical world where the Crimson Kingdom is on the brink of ruin at the hands of the Black Slayer, the Demon King of the Underground Dark Empire. The 16th Crimson Emperor, Ronnie IV, entrusts his infant sons Randy and Zakk to his loyal servant Ozzy, and the trio flees to another dimension to preserve a chance of light. After 17 years of training as wizard‑kings, Randy discovers that Black Slayer’s forces have grown stronger and that his brother Zakk has vanished while Ozzy has died. Determined to end the darkness, Randy sets out to recover the Five Crimson Emblem Seals that belong to the King Crimson family, a quest that will force him to battle countless evil and dark creatures under the Black Slayer’s command. The fate of the kingdom now rests on Randy’s lone struggle to retrieve the seals and expel the greatest evil.
