Summary

When I first saw the NES cartridge labeled *Fist of the North Star*—or, in its brief CES debut, *Ken the Great Bear Fist*—I was struck by how the game squeezes a whole manga‑anime saga into a single‑plane beat‑'em‑up. You guide Kenshiro from left to right, jumping by nudging the D‑pad up and reserving the A and B buttons for a surprisingly deep combat system: basic punches and kicks evolve into rapid combos, projectile blasts, and even a knife‑and‑arrow reflection when you collect the right power‑up stars.

The star power‑ups are a quirky ladder: white stars boost you to four levels, then black stars take you up to seven, each step unlocking new moves and, at the peak, ripping Kenshiro’s shirt open for extra defense. Supplemental items—like the Hokuto Army flag for health, silver and gold necklaces for bomb units and a fleeting Musƍ Tensei invincibility—feel like secret nods to hardcore fans. Every 100,000 points grants an extra life, and your projectile ammo refills after dispatching twenty thugs.

Developed while the *Hokuto no Ken 2* anime was still in its infancy, the game only covers the Tentei arc and ends with an optional showdown against the Nameless Shura. The boss roster is a mix of manga and anime legends—Solia, Taiga, Boltz—and the original character Bronza, the lone non‑Hokuto Shinken master of Musƍ Tensei. The U.S. version’s cover art even shows Kenshiro sparring with Toki, a character who never appears in the actual gameplay, highlighting the quirky disconnect between marketing and the on‑screen experience.

Storyline

In the NES version of Hokuto no Ken (often called Fist of the North Star), the story picks up after Raoh’s death. The Central Imperial Capital, now ruled by the tyrannical Tentei, has fallen into chaos. Kenshiro returns to aid the now‑grown Bat and Rin, who are leading the Hokuto Army’s resistance against the Tentei’s corrupt imperial forces. As he pushes deeper into the capital, Kenshiro must face the Four Generals of Gento and their leader, Falco the Gold. The game’s narrative centers on his struggle to restore order and avenge the fallen.
