Summary
Flying Dragon: The Secret Scroll (Hiryū no Ken: Ōgi no Sho) blends classic side‑scrolling action with a surprising dash of role‑playing depth. The game splits its world into two distinct modes: Journey levels let you guide Ryuhi through scrolling stages, hunting down five bosses and gathering mission‑critical items, while Tournament levels drop you into one‑on‑one duels that echo the series’ original fighting roots. To see the true ending you must finish the adventure twice—first by collecting all six Secret Scrolls, then by replaying and snatching those scrolls again plus four hidden crystal balls that only appear on the second quest. Famitsu gave the title a respectable 28 out of 40, noting its ambitious mix of platforming and combat. For anyone who enjoys a retro challenge that rewards thorough exploration, Flying Dragon offers a uniquely layered experience.
Storyline
In the NES title Hiryuu no Ken – Ougi no Sho, the young hero Ryuhi is born in a mysterious Chinese region and raised on high mountain tops, where his wise teacher Juan trains him in Kempo. Juan, the author of the Secret Scrolls of Hiryu‑no‑Ken, is ambushed and robbed, but he manages to save the sixth volume, the Shingan No Sho (Book of the Mind's Eye), for Ryuhi. On his dying breath, Juan urges Ryuhi to travel to the Shorinji temple, where Bishop Gengai welcomes the boy and further instructs him in Shorinji Kempo. Six years later a challenge letter arrives from the enigmatic "Tusk Soldiers," a super‑corp from an evil world that seeks the scrolls and the World Tournament of Contact Sports. Learning that the Tusk Soldiers were behind Juan’s attack, Ryuhi enters the tournament to stop them and uncover the secret of the Hiryu no Ken scrolls.
