Summary
Hard Drivin' was slated for a home‑console incarnation on the NES, but the cartridge never saw the light of day. Unlike the arcade original’s real‑time 3D polygons, the unreleased version was built around pre‑rendered sprites and a 2.5D visual trick that tried to mimic the sense of depth without the heavy hardware. Mark Morris handled the programming, adapting the game’s signature stunt‑track layout—complete with loops, drawbridges and traffic—into a format the 8‑bit system could display. The design aimed to preserve the arcade’s split‑track concept, letting players chase time‑trial scores while dodging obstacles, even though the NES’s limited color palette forced a more stylized look. Though it never shipped, the prototype remains a curious footnote in the history of early 3D racing games.
