Summary

Gumshoe blends a classic side‑scrolling run‑and‑jump adventure with the Nintendo Zapper in a way that feels both awkward and oddly addictive. As Mr. Stevenson automatically strolls forward, I have to shoot him to make him jump while picking off monsters, diving planes, and even hungry sharks before they block the path. Missing the target burns a precious bullet, but popping red balloons replenishes the ammo, forcing a frantic balance between offense and conservation.

The game contains four distinct stages, each hiding a secret area unlocked after collecting at least twenty balloons, and a direct arcade version landed on the VS System in 1987. Notably, Nintendo never released it in Japan, making it one of the few home‑grown Nintendo titles exclusive to the West. The light‑gun mechanic combined with platforming makes every level feel like a high‑stakes obstacle course.

Critics have been split: some label it the worst of the NES black‑box releases for its instant‑kill pits, while others praise its weirdness, calling it a fascinating, hard‑to‑master curiosity and an early echo of today’s endless runner genre.

Storyline

In Gumshoe, you play as Mr. Stevenson, an ex‑FBI agent turned private detective. A mafia boss named King Dom sends a ransom note, revealing that he has kidnapped Stevenson’s daughter, Jennifer. To rescue her, Stevenson has just 24 hours to locate and retrieve five Black Panther Diamonds, the only bargaining chips King Dom will accept.
