Summary

Guerrilla War (known as Guevara in Japan) drops you into a top‑down battlefield on a Caribbean island that unmistakably resembles Cuba. You control one of two revolutionaries—originally inspired by Fidel Castro and Che Guevara—busting through jungles, city streets, marshes and bridges as you try to oust the tyrant.

The arcade cabinet used eight‑way rotary sticks, so you could walk in one direction while firing in another, a novelty that made the action feel hyper‑responsive. When the game landed on the NES the rotating hardware disappeared, but SNK added two‑player simultaneous play and unlimited continues, which keeps the pace relentless.

The title earned a perfect five‑star rating in *Ultimate Nintendo* and sports iconic cover art by Marc Ericksen, the same artist behind Ikari Warriors III. It now lives on in the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection and was re‑issued on Switch and PS4 through Hamster’s Arcade Archives in 2021.

Storyline

Guerrilla War drops you into a gritty Caribbean island where two rebel commandos fight to topple a tyrannical ruler. In the original Japanese version the fighters are identified as Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, but the Western release leaves them unnamed. Your mission is a series of raids that aim to liberate the island from the dictator’s grip.

The game pits you against endless waves of enemy soldiers, and you can pick up weapons dropped by fallen troops. Hostages appear throughout the levels; rescuing them boosts your score while any casualty triggers a heavy penalty. Occasionally you’ll commandeer a tank, adding firepower to your assault.
